UWIC 33 v NEWPORT SARACENS 27

UWIC defeated an experienced Newport Saracens in the Konika Minolta cup. It was a case of speed and opportunism against endeavour and know how. Saracens quickly established a 12-0 lead but the students came back following a break from Lee Williams and good approach work brought a try from prop, Jamie Stephens, converted by full back, Tom Hancock. Saracens then scored a converted try to bring the half time score to 17-9 in the Sarries favour.

UWIC were quick out of the block in the second half and a sparkling move exemplified by an outstanding inside flip from outside half, Nicky Roberts, gave Stephens his second try easily converted by Hancock. Good passing by lock, Alex Jones, next created room for Matt Mclean to kick and chase and score a try converted by Hancock.

The Sarries were not going to give up easily and snatched the lead with an unconverted try. Then wing Alex Eatley rounded off a fine piece of continuity with a try in the corner. A Sarries penalty grabbed back the lead but a flowing series of moves ended in a try for wing, Pete McKee converted by Hancock to snatch victory.

The Sarries contained three former UWIC students in captain, Matthew Evans, Morgan Lovell and Matthew Wood
