UWIC RFC EUROPEAN 7's CHAMPIONS
UWIC RFC returned from the Inaugural European Universities 7's Championships held in Grenoble (France) as winners, overcoming Leeds met in a scintillating Final.
In the pool rounds, UWIC beat Montpellier 17-7 and then Hambourg 39-0 to progress through to the quarter finals stages held at the Lesdigiueres Stadium, home of FC Grenoble.
In the Quarter Final they played a spirited Italian side from Padova, and won 33 - 5, this led to tough semi-final against home team Grenoble. After a tough first half, UWIC used all their patience and skills and eventually won 22-0 to put them in the final, where they faced the other British Team Leeds Met.
UWIC started well, completely overwhelming Leeds Met with some powerful contact work and strong running, and went into the interval with a 20-0 lead.
Leeds started off the 2nd half and quickly score 4 tries that gave them the lead 26-20. UWIC looked doomed with 1 minute to go, but Captain Matt McLean took possession of the ball and ran 70 meters to score the try and convert it to put UWIC back in the lead 27-26, with both teams thinking the match was over.
However, the referee, Kirsten Ljungdahl (Germany), continued with the game, and from another 70meters out UWIC gained possession in the contact area and a surprised Alan Awcock raced to the posts to score with Matt McLean converting making the score 34-26. To the relief of UWIC the referee called time and the victory was sealed.
